In recent years, Formula 1 has seen its popularity grow in the United States thanks to the impact of the Drive to Survive series produced by Netflix. A few days before the Las Vegas Grand Prix, James Hinchcliffe, former IndyCar driver and current face of F1 TV, explained how the documentary has changed the perception of the championship abroad.
According to Hinchcliffe, the series has opened the doors of Formula 1 to a wider and more diverse audience. The arrival of Liberty Media marked a strategic shift, while Netflix production helped reach previously uninterested demographics. “The series has brought the championship closer to a younger and more varied audience, with a significant increase in the female presence,” observed the commentator, underlining the role of modern communication in the relaunch of the category.
A crucial aspect of Drive to Survive was the focus on the drivers, presented not only as athletes, but also as people. The internal dynamics of the teams and the difficulties that the protagonists faced created an emotional bond with the viewers. "It showed how incredible the protagonists of this sport are, highlighting both the technical challenges and the personal stories," added the American driver, highlighting how this approach has made the championship more attractive to the American public.
